World Seniors Snooker Offers 33/1 About Repeat Of 'That Final'...

Snooker re-racks the past with all-star senior event

We've seen it in football, golf, motor racing... George Foreman even did it for boxing!

The term 'senior sport' is becoming ever more common amongst the various disciplines... and now snooker has started to court the 'grey vote'.

Thankfully, the effort expended in leaning over the green baize allows gentlemen of a certain age to keep playing the game long into their twilight years... and the upcoming World Seniors Championship is testimony to this fact.

It also illustrates how the leadership of snooker supremo Barry Hearn continues to push the modern game into new areas, geographical and chronological.

Familiar names contest World Title

The latest incarnation of the World Seniors Championship started last year when Jimmy White beat Steve Davis 4-1... Jimmy finally winning a world title!

That event included some familiar names from yesteryear (Joe Johnson, Cliff Thorburn, Dennis Taylor, John Parrott) and the 2011 renewal brings even more past masters back to the 'world stage'.

Names such as Doug Mountjoy, Dene O'Kane, Neal Foulds and Bolton's finest cuesmith, Tony Knowles, will compete along with Davis, White, Parrott and Nigel Bond for the £18,000 first prize.

It's a best of 3 frame format, quick-fire action... rather like an extended version of BBC's Pot Black.

Who's the favourite to win...?

The early running in the betting has been made by Bond (7/2) largely based on the 45-year-old's success at the 2011 Snooker Shoot-Out.

Bond won the Blackpool challenge back in January - a one frame knockout event contested by all the world's players including Ronnie O'Sullivan, Judd Trump, Stephen Hendry... everyone!

Strong form for this event. More so with the likes of Taylor, Foulds and Parrott more at home in the TV commentary box these days, behind not in front of the cameras.

Jimmy White (9/2), Steve Davis (5/1) and Tony Drago (15/2) come next in the betting. Right down to the 1986 world champion, Joe Johnson, at a more fanciful 100/1.

And for the sentimental, it's a 33/1 shot for Davis and Taylor to roll back the years and repeat their epic final from the Crucible, Sheffield 1985 when the Irishman edged it 18-17 on the final black.

Some 18.5 million watched that game... organisers forecast slightly less to tune in to see a potential re-match some 26 years on!

The action takes place on November 5-6 and with the first round draw already being made there are some mouthwatering ties lined up.

White v Knowles, Parrott v Johnson and Thorburn v Mountjoy all promise to recreate the game we all came to love... we're all still Snooker Loopy!
