United The Favourites But Fergie's Men Are Far From Unbeatable
They say the sign of a good team is winning... even when they're playing badly. And there's an argument to be made that Manchester United won last season's Premier League in similar style.
Despite being all-conquering at home, Sir Alex Ferguson saw his side prove all too vulnerable on the road during the 2010/11 campaign.
And despite eventually winning the title with something to spare that, in part, was down to the problems with their nearest rivals Chelsea and Arsenal... along with Manchester City's failure to mount a consistent challenge and the modest showings by both Spurs and Liverpool.
Eased down at the finish, the Red Devils still won the title by 9 points.
With additions such as David De Gea, Phil Jones and Ashley Young there's good cause to say United will be even stronger this coming season. More so with the Mexican marksman, Javier Hernandez, now a permanent fixture in the Old Trafford starting XI.
Who can challenge the champions?
There is cause for optimism amongst the chasing pack.
Chelsea, under new boss Andre Villas-Boas can only get better once Fernando Torres starts scoring again. Manchester City must be stronger as a unit under Roberto Mancini after last season's FA Cup winning exploits... and replacing Carlos Tevez with Sergio Aguero isn't necessarily a backwards step.
Arsenal, presuming they do make a few signings (possibly on the back of Cesc Fabregas finally moving to Barcelona) can feature, more so if Robin Van Persie stays fit.
Liverpool have recruited heavily with Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll last season bolstered by the signings of Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and Charlie Adam in the Summer - a squad with some depth now at Anfield.
And you just never know with Spurs... Harry Redknapp is capable of producing a good side but much depends upon the retention of key players like Gareth Bale, Rafael van der Vaart and Luka Modric.
There's value prices to be taken...
Some might well consider Manchester United at 2/1 to be a great piece of value.
It certainly looks much better value than their 'noisy neighbours' at the newly-named Etihad Stadium... City are just 9/2 to land a first title in over 40 years.
Chelsea split the pair with the Stamford Bridge outfit trading at 3/1.
Of the rest it's Arsenal (10/1) and Liverpool (12/1) who are the only other taken seriously with Spurs (66/1) given only a minimal chance by the layers.
Other key betting markets
Aside from the Premier League title race, at the bottom of the table there promises to be a season-long battle every bit as hard fought.
Newcomers Swansea City, QPR and Norwich City enter the top flight from the Championship. These three head the relegation betting with the Welsh side at just 4/7 to go straight back down, Norwich are 8/11 and Rangers 7/4.
However, history tells us at least one of these sides will stay up (click Will The Premier League Newcomers Survive? for more).
The prize for top scoring in the division, the Golden Boot, is dominated by the leading sides with Hernandez and Wayne Rooney heading the lists at 8/1 with Torres and Van Persie (both 10/1) next best. There has also been interest for Suarez (14/1) of Liverpool.
And first manager to leave their post (the Sack Race) is always an interesting one... Steve Kean (Blackburn) is 9/4 favourite with Neil Warnock (QPR) second on the list at 7/2.
