Can The US Deliver A Homegrown PGA Winner?

USPGA 2011 Logo
American golf isn't in good shape.

On a national level 'Team USA' was beaten in the most recent Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor.

In terms of the majors - the Masters, US Open, the Open and USPGA - there has been no American winner since Phil Mickelson won the US Masters at Augusta National in early 2010.

That's six straight major golf events without a US winner. The longest run, without American success, in over 100 years!!

And in terms of players...

The world rankings are dominated by Europeans and 'world' golfers. Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer head a current Euro 1-2-3 in the global standings with guys like Jason Day, Charl Schwartzel, K.J. Choi and Adam Scott all in the top twenty.

So Where Have All The Americans Gone?

Tiger Woods is a shadow of his former self (that's even when he does play!) and will surely struggle all the more having fired his long-stanging caddie, Steve Williams.

Phil Mickelson played well enough at Royal St. Georges in the Open Championship but has been in generally poor form in 2011.

And that generation of US golfer, from the last 10-15 years (Zach Johnson, Stewart Cink, Jim Furyk, Justin Leonard, David Toms), all familiar names, are slowly drifting off the scene.

Those before them (Love, Lehman, Perry, Sutton, Hoch and O'Meara) are all headed for the Seniors Tour.

Is There New US Talent Coming Through?

Thankfully for fans of golf Stateside, there is a new wave of players coming through. Guys who can, and will, challenge for majors in the coming years.

Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler both played very well at Sandwich. Lucas Glover (former US Open champion) was also in the mix for a long time before Darren Clarke won the Claret Jug.

Hunter Mahan, Matt Kuchar, Nick Watney are three more names to consider. Bubba Watson too.

In all there's 10 players you could mention (we've not even listed world No.5 Steve Stricker yet) who could land that elusive major golf title for America.

What To Expect At The USPGA...

Top golf tipster, Keith Elliott, who advised last year's PGA winner (Martin Kaymer W60/1) expects this year's tournament in Atlanta, Georgia to be highly competitive.

"The USGA will want to give their players every chance of winning. The course set-up at John's Creek will suit the Americans... much more than the Open!

And there's more than enough talent in the US ranks to deliver a winner. They will be desperate to win after such a poor run.

World players, and especially the Europeans, will dominate the betting but do not write off the Americans... they have the talent to win."

Keith Elliott

Elliott might not be wrong either. Having seen Charl Schwartzel, Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke land the first three majors of 2011, it might well be time for the Americans to strike back!

All will be revealed when the action starts on August 8th in Atlanta.
