Will Premier League Newcomers Beat The Drop?

Championship title winners QPR are 6/4 to be relegated next season
Championship title winners QPR are 6/4 to be relegated from the Premier League next season
The three teams promoted from the Championship (QPR, Norwich City and Swansea City) have barely got used to the idea of playing in the top flight... and the bookmakers have already written off their chances of staying in the Premier League.

Norwich City were last in top division in 2004/05, Queens Park Rangers in 1995/96 and Swansea City are back amongst the best sides in England (and Wales!) after an absence which dates back to their relegation in 1982/83.

Neil Warnock steered QPR up as champions. Paul Lambert led Norwich City to the Premier League after a second straight promotion. The Canaries followed up their League 1 title the previous season with a runners-up spot in the Championship this time around.

Swansea joined them courtesy of their dramatic play-off final win at Wembley Stadium over Reading - Brendan Rodgers' side winning the '£90m game' by a 4-2 scoreline.

History Says 'They Will Survive'

Well... all three might not stay up. But the statistics definitely point to at least one, if not two, of these clubs surviving their first season back in the Premier League.

Think back 12 months and of the three sides who came up from the Championship (Newcastle, West Brom and Blackpool) only Ian Holloway's Seasiders went straight back down again - and even that was in the balance until the last game of the season.

The season before only Burnley failed at the first attempt, the season before that it was just West Brom... and so it goes.

Over the past decade, of the 30 clubs who have been promoted to the top flight, only 13 have been relegated after their first season. That's 13/30 (43%) who managed just one season in Europe's self-styled 'hardest division'.

Put another way 17/30 (57%) survived. That means any randomly selected, newly promoted side (like QPR, Norwich or Swansea) should not be odds-on to go down!

And, guess what? The bookies have Swansea (4/9) and Norwich (8/13) to be relegated first time around with only QPR (6/4), bankrolled by Bernie Ecclestone and his millions, at odds-against.

And That's Why They Are Value...

Bear in mind that 1997/98, a full 13 years ago, was the last time all three sides who came up from the Championship went straight back down again the following season. They were Bolton, Barnsley and Crystal Palace.

Promoted sides are written off far too quickly by backers and bookies alike... and that means there are value bets to be had about the Premier League 2011/12 season.
