When Will Tiger Woods Win Another Major?

Tiger Woods last won a golf major in 2008 ... and now his reign as world No.1 is set to end we ask - will he win another?

Tiger Woods will cease to be the best golfer on the planet come October 31st. Well, at least as far as the world rankings are concerned.

Woods: Lost his aura of invincibility
Woods: Lost his aura of invincibility
The end of his 280 week reign as the world No.1 has been put down by many commentators solely to his off the course activities, subsequent time away from the game and eventual divorce from his wife, Elin Nordegren.

Way Below His Best

Maybe so. This saga of events has certainly caused arguably the greatest player ever to walk the fairways to perform way below his best in the period 2009/2010.

However, few observers mention that Woods hasn't actually won a major golf tournament (US Masters, US Open, British Open or USPGA) since he landed his 14th top level title at the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines.

In fact, Tiger won his first 8 major titles during a blistering run from 1997-2002 where in 5 years, spanning just 22 tournaments, he carried all before him. But, and there is a but, thereafter Woods has claimed 'only' six more titles during a 8½ year spell which now covers 34 major golf events.

The momentum of those early years, the total domination of his rivals on the USPGA and European Tour, was already on the wane long before the most famous shot of his career (namely, Nordegren's 3-iron through the window of his car that fateful November evening) brought his golfing life to a shuddering halt.

So Has Woods Got What It Takes To Win Another Major Title?

Undoubtedly the man has the potential to win again. He has all the experience and battling qualities required not to mention the 'bottle' necessary to seize any opportunity which should come his way.

That said, he's lost the air of invincibility he once had. That fearsome reputation that beat his opponents almost before they had made it onto the first tee. Tiger needs to get some of that back before he can be considered as officially 'on the mend'.

In flashes the form is there - a top four finish in the US Masters, a final day demolition of Francesco Molinari in the Ryder Cup ... but it's sporadic.

Despite all this Woods remains 4/1 favourite to win the 2011 US Masters and still 2/5 to beat the Jack Nicklaus record of 18 major golf titles by 2014.

However, with new kids on the block like Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler, Tiger's task will get tougher with every passing tournament. And until Woods wins again, at whatever level, and returns to No.1 in the world, his career is still going to be judged in terms of 'before and after'. He needs another major title ... and soon!
